On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, I had the pleasure to attend a children’s event at the Florissant Valley Library in St Louis, Missouri called A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, hosted by Mackenzie Smiddy who’s the Youth Specialist at the library.
As a single mom Mackenzie said, “I feel that it’s important for us to make time for our families, and people just don’t really do that anymore.” These events provide family fun time and educational, at the event the families watch a short document on how Charlie Brown Thanksgiving was created, followed by the document of the actual movie. The family got to enjoy a “Charlie Brown Feast” that consisted of pretzels, jellybeans, popcorn, toast, and lemonade. There were also Charlie Brown coloring sheets and puzzle sheets for the children to enjoy with their families.
Although this was Mackenzie's first time hosting this event, she has hosted a number of other events at the Florissant Library and at other Libraries in St Louis, for example, back in June Mackenzie visited the St Louis County Library where she read and sang songs with the Family Center Summer Campers. And on December 20, 2023, she will be hosting a Penguin Party for ages two through five years old. There’ll be games, arts and crafts, and much more, but parents have to register their children at the Florissant Valley Library website.
When I asked Mackenzie how often they have children and family events, she said: “we try to have an event at least once a month, so that family can spend time together, but also to give the children something fun and safe to do.” The event lasted for about an hour which is a reasonable time from 7 pm to 8 pm which isn’t too late for younger children to be out, especially on a school night.
